22 HANDYSIDE, KING CROSS

22 Handyside, King Cross, is a contemporary office block taking design cues from the industrial heritage of the site. Fagerhult collaborated with E3 Consulting Engineers from the initial design concept, developing an integrated lighting scheme that complements the overall design by Coffey Architects.

The brief from the developer – Argent – was to deliver a world class city-centre office building with characterful and lofty internal spaces and high levels of natural daylight. To help maintain the lofty nature of the office spaces, E3 Consulting Engineers proposed an indirect/direct lighting solution with a high upward lighting distribution, and the Notor 78 achieves this with a 70% up, 30% down distribution, contributing to the overall harmony of the building. The lighting design within the office floors enhances the building users’ overall wellbeing and, from environmental perspective, helped the project achieve BREEAM outstanding.

Using integrated technology, Fagerhult has produced an extremely energy efficient lighting system, including Organic Response, which also enhances visual comfort throughout the building. With features such as real time occupancy monitoring, Bluetooth beaconing and integration with third-party systems via an API or SDK, the Organic Response system offers a solid foundation for future smart building functionality. Moreover, the integrated luminaires are also capable of monitoring and testing emergency devices throughout the main office areas. 

Working closely with the D&B contractors, BAM and MJL, responding to the architectural design and interests of the developer, Fagerhult was able to create a bespoke wireless lighting system that offers occupiers both control and flexibility.
