The bed company Hästens is the winner of the Crystal Clear award. Hästens, a luxury bed company, recently opened up a new store in Stockholm, Sweden. The lighting solution is the result of a successful cooperation between Hästens and Fagerhult. The lighting design is cosy, almost private using controls in an advanced way.
The motivation of the jury: Hästens managed to achieve the extraordinary feat of an energy consumption of only 4,7 w/m2. The solution with the innovative use of mini spotlights in the sleep spa on the lower floor is the result of a very creative lighting design. The technical solution with LED and use of controls shows a very forward thinking attitude. It is a future proof solutions that can develop even further in the future, both when it comes to saving energy but also to create an atmosphere that attract customers. Hästens has a lighting solution that really captures the feeling of the brand, which is an investment in the brand as well as in the commercial store.
Members of the jury that elected the winner was Jesper Kongshaug, well-known Danish lighting designer that has created the much appreciated lighting design for the new Royal Playhouse in Copenhagen and the lighting design for The Blue Planet- the new National Danish Aquarium. Also in the jury was Fagerhults own lighting specialist Henrik Clausen. A much appreciated and inspiring lecturer, member of the IESNA, Director of the Fagerhult Lighting Academy and responsible for Research & Education, a really great source of knowledge. The third member of the jury was Elisabeth Back, Head of Product and Brands at Fagerhult and responsible for product development and marketing. She has a background in creating brand value based innovation.
The prize is specially designed for this occasion by designer Kajsa Willner, and has the shape of a snowflake to correlate with the Crystal Clear concept. Willner is an up and coming furniture designer who is known to make products out of recycled or recyclable material.
The Project
The objective with the Hästens store was to create a space as inviting as your own home. “This shop should feel like home but also reflect our history”, says Linnea Blank, Concept Designer at Hästens.
Hästens started back in 1852 in the small town of Köping, Sweden. Chosen elements in the design of the shop are made in materials that are inspired by the original factory. The lighting is of great importance for the interior design. It makes the shop feel exclusive and homely at the same time. The shop has two floors. The entry level is bright and open but if you take the stairs one level down you will enter a dark and cosy environment. The lower level is created to increase relaxation and an intimate feeling for customers to feel comfortable to try the beds.“The lighting in this concept is central for the feeling of the brand we want to create, says Blank. It enhances the luxurious feeling of the store.”
The lighting solution
Since Hästens is an exclusive shop with few customers at the same time, it is fairly easy to create a lighting solution with controls and movement sensors. A few activities are also programmed according to what time of day it is. The entrance floor is brighter and has a welcoming feeling. The lighting solution is created to lead the customers into the store. There are a few exclusive beds for display and areas for discussion and relaxation. The lighting solution has a high level of comfort, achieved by putting capcones on the spotlights (Zone Evo LED). The lighting solution in the stairs leading to the bottom floor is created to make it feel luxurious and create curiosity, not to be mistaken for personnel or warehouse stairs.
The control system
The control system is based on five different scenes. Amongst the functions there is a possibility to lower the accents- and integrated lighting in selected areas. This is very useful, especially when it comes down to trying out the bed that is right for you without the risk of blinding.
A sensor is placed so when some one is entering the door the accent lighting at the demo bed is lit up to create attention to the bed. There is also a night-light in the shop perfectly balanced with the streetlights outside. The outside logo sign is programmed to switch on one hour before sunset and to switch off one hour after sunrise.
A conscious company
As a conclusion, Hästens is really satisfied with the solution, which is both energy efficient, coherent with their brand and future proofed since there are more control options. Hästens has a strict environmental policy. They use material from the surrounding area like Swedish pine and steel. All textiles are eco-certified. Sustainability and local production is central for Hästens and they choose Fagerhult as a lighting partner to provide a creative and very energy efficient lighting solution.
Hästens is now launching this shop concept on several international markets like Holland and Spain.

Fagerhult’s medical supply units approved under the Medical Device Regulation
Fagerhult’s medical supply units are now approved under the new Medical Device Regulation (MDR). ”We see the benefit of offering our customers products that are already tailored to meet future requirements,” says Lars Handberg, Technical Product Manager for medical supply units. The former Medical Device Directive (MDD) has been replaced by the new Medical Device Regulation (MDR). Suppliers must complete the transition by 31 December 2028 at the latest. Fagerhult is already delivering its medical supply units in full compliance with MDR. ”Fagerhult began early to ensure our documentation and processes were aligned with the new regulation MDR. As a result, Fagerhult’s units already meet the requirements of MDR 2017/745, Article 22,” says Lars Handberg. Img As a consequence of this, the classic CE marking is removed. The reason is that according to the regulation, if you choose to follow Article 22, modular products - the ward panels should not be provided with an additional CE mark, (Article 22, Section 5) beacuse the included components are already CE marked. ”This doesn’t impact the functionality or safety of our products. It is simply a result of the legal framework. Our medical supply units comply with product standards and remain just as safe as before. However, it’s worth noting this in case anyone wonders why the CE marking is no longer present on the new products being delivered”, Lars Handberg explains.
Closing the loop – and extending the lifecycle of luminaires
The concept of rebuilding old luminaires to save material and energy is growing. Sometimes, all an outdated luminaire needs to shine bright again is some tender love and engineering skills. We met Emma Hallman, Mathilda Holl and Andreas Ekslätt, the team behind ReLight at Fagerhult, to discuss the challenges of finding solutions that will take old luminaires into the future. At Fagerhult, a deeply rooted innovation culture influences all aspects of work. Possibly, it springs from the founder Bertil Svensson's mindset of solving problems with sometimes small means – and curiosity and dedication. Unlike today, sustainability may not have been a buzzword back then. However, using our resources consciously and striving for high quality have always been cornerstones for Fagerhult. Today, a new focus on circularity has urged us to challenge our thinking and makes us conscious of finding long-lasting solutions. Fagerhult's Bespoke Lighting Solutions (BLS) department has developed unique luminaires and adapted solutions for many years. So, refurbishing and updating old luminaires is something familiar to us. However, the ambition to reuse and rebuild old luminaires to lower climate impact has increased over time. In this process, yesterday's design and technology are brought up to speed by today's advances to meet the requirements of tomorrow. Quote ReLight your old luminaires To the ReLight team at Fagerhult, there are no unusual questions or impossible solutions. Daily, they manage inquiries regarding specially developed lighting solutions for projects from Fagerhult's markets. It's a complex process, but over time, they have learnt that some projects are ideal for reusing old luminaires instead of investing in new ones. "To us, the luminaire's qualities in lighting comfort, safety and aesthetics are at the core of every ReLight project. When requested, we also calculate if – and how much – we can reduce the luminaire's total climate impact through its lifecycle." says Emma Hallman. Within ReLight, there is an outspoken will to save materials and energy – and make an environmental effort by updating the luminaires. However, not all old luminaires can live forever; some are outdated and better recycled than refurbished. Img "If the circumstances don't meet our requirements and it doesn't work to rebuild the luminaire, we will not take the project further. We would never compromise on light comfort, quality, safety or the expression of the luminaire if it does not result in a first-class end solution", says Emma Hallman. At Fagerhult, safety and quality are the red threads that combine all products. And ReLight is no exception. Throughout the process, CE-marking and testing are crucial factors. "To ensure the overall quality, the updated luminaire is CE-marked in full before delivery. We also want to make the installation on site both smooth and quick, and the new kit is as close to a complete luminaire as possible," says Andreas Ekslätt, Design Engineer.
