Fagerhult at the CIE Convention in Kuala Lumpur
A lot of things have happened in the lighting industry since I participated in my first CIE convention in New Delhi, India in 1995. We have moved away from the hard technical requirements towards a more human lighting. The connection between Light & Health that started by the discovery of the third Receptor in the human retina in 2002 has revolutionized the lighting industry.
The headline of the 2010 CIE convention held in Frankfurt, Germany was: ”Will LED Come?” – I guess everyone knows the answer by now. This year CIE could celebrate its 100 years anniversary and to underline the increasing global integration the convention was the first held in Asia, more precisely in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
This year’s headline was ”Lighting Quality and Energy Efficiency”. Earlier lighting professionals had to choose if we would provide Quality Lighting OR Energy Efficiency. During CIE president, Prof Ann Webb’s opening speech, she underlined that through the development of LED solutions combined with advanced control systems we can for the first time enjoy the benefits of both!
The main topics of the three-day long conference, where more than 300 delegates from 37 countries participated, were LED and Human factors. The international lighting standards are lacking behind the speed of LED development and we are finally beginning to understand, accept and document the positive effects of ambient lighting.
In short; it felt wonderful to be back among true lighting nerds where the future of innovative lighting systems are being discussed on a scientific base with an ever increasing focus on lighting for people.
