We are now closing the loop
When our founder Bertil Svensson built his first lamp in 1943 – from assembled parts: cord, lampshade, metal tube, and a plug – his vision was to create something new. The luminaire became a Christmas gift for his mother, and a first step towards improving people’s everyday lives. To this day, our goal remains the same: to allow individual parts, each carefully selected, to be refined and to spread new light.
For us, sustainability is about smart ideas and conserving resources. It has also been a guiding mindset through eight decades, since the very first »Lampen« (Swedish accent for "the Lamp") was assembled in Fagerhult, the place where we still operate.
“I had bought a metal tube, a piece of cord, a lamp holder, and a plug. I bent the pipe into a shape that looked like a question mark, wrapped a string around it, and painted it all. Then I persuaded a carpenter to make a birch lamp base, and bought a lampshade at a local store. Making lamps then became what I did.”

Every step counts
A lot has happened since Fagerhult was founded some eighty years ago. But conserving resources, utilising materials, and questioning old truths are something we still carry with us. Along the journey towards a more sustainable future, every step counts, and even a small initiative can be tomorrow’s big solution. We share a common focus on innovation, collaboration, and sustainability, which is the basis for how we work and collaborate with our colleagues, partners, and customers.
We present some good examples here of how employees in different parts of our organisation – from production technicians and office workers to those in the sales companies – thought in new ways to use materials and resources in our workday.
Recycled aluminium
Together with Hydro Extrusion Sweden, we have conducted a pilot project on the recycling of extruded aluminium.
Minimal waste
Plastic profiles are cut at our supplier prior to delivery, which results in profiles of the right length and minimal waste.
Old TVs
The reflectors in the Kvisten luminaire have been reused from old televisions.
Reuse of bubble wrap
Bubble wrap from suppliers is reused to pack parts of our luminaires, saving a considerable amount of packaging annually.
Disposable pallets become heating
Our heating comes from renewable sources. We break down and burn disposable pallets to heat our factory in Habo.
Less than 1% to landfill
We recycle approximately 75% of all production material and aim to send less than 1% of this to landfill. We sort all production waste very carefully, in some 30 different containers.
Rear made from stamping leftovers
The Multilume Slim luminaire minimises the amount of waste since the sheet metal left over from stamping is used as the rear.
Circular heating
The residual heat from the paint furnace is led circularly back into our heating system.
Optimised louvre
The Beta Opti Nano louvre provides high efficiency and optimal light comfort without multiple shadows – and with minimal material consumption.
Reuse of design
The Pleiad and Rondo luminaires have the same optics, design, and mounting method. This results in lean production and logistics, saving resources.
