Good lighting is created with respect for people and the environment
Can you add without taking away? Melanopic Ratio is a factor that allows you to balance health, the environment, and the economy.
A good investment
Biologically active lighting and smart control systems often cost a bit more than a traditionally planned lighting solution. But when done right, it becomes an investment in people without unnecessarily burdening the environment and the economy. With the help of Melanopic Ratio (Melanopic Daylight Efficacy Ratio – MDER), you can weigh luminaire selection, lighting control, and daylight usage most effectively.
Conserving energy
It's always about conserving energy. Research shows that the circadian rhythm is controlled by a "light shower" of cooler light over a period of 30 minutes to three hours, during the morning or forenoon. Afterward, both light intensity and colour temperature can decrease for the rest of the day, as long as they meet the normative requirements of lighting standards. With lighting control and tunable white, it's possible to create an energy-efficient lighting installation that works intelligently. It should meet the standard's requirement for 500 photopic lux on the working surface and can then be programmed to meet our recommendation of 250 melanopic lux vertically on the eye for two hours in the morning or forenoon.
In healthcare environments, there are excellent opportunities to create a supportive lighting installation in an energy-efficient manner. Because those who are hospitalized are often bedridden, and light enters the eye horizontally, it's possible to achieve the recommended levels with lower energy consumption.
Make the most of daylight
For our biological system, it doesn't matter where the light comes from, as long as it has the right intensity and quality. Considering the natural daylight is a good way to get the right melanopic light to achieve Melanopic Equivalent Daylight Illuminance (MEDI). Anything else would be wasteful. With the addition of natural light and a good control system, it becomes possible to maintain the right light intensities and keep energy consumption low.
Choose luminaires thoughtfully
A luminaire with a high Melanopic Ratio often means that the photopic light intensity doesn't need to be as high, allowing energy savings. But it must be done thoughtfully! Every person has individual needs, and a truly good light planning takes these into account. For us at Fagerhult, melanopic light is an integral part of this.
